Mother Lavonia Griggs Obituary

Lavonia Allen Griggs, 81,  was born December 24th, 1941 to the late Reverend Milton Allen, Sr. and the late Willie Margaret Allen. She gained her wings on November 27th, 2023.

Lavonia, affectionately known as "Sister", by her family,  was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Willie Lee Griggs, Sr., her son Ronnie Griggs, her three brothers, Milton Allen, Jr., Johnnie Allen,  Willie J. Allen, and her sister, Annette Smith.

Her love for cooking led her to a career as a school cafeteria worker. She worked for the Houston Co School Board as a cafeteria worker in the Ashford High School and the Webb Elementary School for 20 plus years until retirement. In addition to her biological children, she had "additional children" at school as she was often referred to as Ms. Lou or Mama Griggs. She gave money for snacks, lunch, personal items, or just words of encouragement for any student in need. She also quickly became “mama” and “grandma” to the staff at the nursing home.

While raising nine kids, she was a basketball mom, a football mom, a cheerleader mom, a pageant mom, a band mom and chaperone, and a neighborhood mom. She always had popsicles in the freezer for the neighborhood kids.

She was a lifelong member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church and she loved singing and traveling with the S.C. Walker Choir. In 2022, she was officially recognized for the queen she is, by winning the title of Ms. Crowne Healthcare of Eufaula, AL.

Lavonia leaves to cherish her memories, her children Barbara Ann (Roger) Ward, Willie Lee Griggs, Jr., Linda White, Gayle (Jimmy) Lott, Denise Griggs, Daphanie Kim Griggs, Jacqueline (Thomas) Bailey, and Holli Griggs, two daughters in law, Eliza Griggs and Henrietta Griggs, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, a special sister in law, Daisy Griggs, members of the S.C. Walker Choir, and her "adopted daughter", Evelyn Roberson.
